The firm and client Pfizer presented a program focusing on the story of the Dred Scott Decision as told by the direct descendants of Dred Scott, a former slave, and of Roger B. Taney, the Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the historic majority opinion.
In celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month and National Coming Out Day, the firm hosted a client event that included a virtual screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary CURED. CURED illuminates the pivotal campaign by a diverse group of activists and allies that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses.
Attendees included in-house counsel from AT&T, The Home Depot, Target, Freddie Mac, Delta Air Lines, The Walt Disney Company, Paramount Pictures and Lenovo, among others, as well as members of various state judiciaries.
At this webinar, speakers discussed what civil rights leaders and lawyers are doing to support the Asian American Pacific Islander community and what role corporate America can play in furthering these efforts.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the firm partnered with client Equifax, to co-host a fireside chat with Presidential Medal of Freedom Honoree Sylvia Mendez, the Mexican-Puerto Rican civil rights activist whose parents – along with several other Mexican American families – challenged the constitutionality of segregated “Schools for Mexicans” in California.
WIIT is a group of 45 King & Spalding women lawyers from different practice areas across the firm. The group held a networking reception for women clients in conjunction with the annual Global Summit of ChIPs, a nonprofit organization that advances and connects women in technology, law and policy.
In this discussion, clients shared impacts on their businesses from the COVID-19 pandemic and discussed diversity, inclusion and U.S. national events in 2020. Panelists included general counsel from Emerson, Broadcom, Bristol Myers Squibb, Public Storage and Madewell.
Sharing Perspectives —
Celebrating Diversity
"I appreciate the way the firm has supported me in my progression to partner. I have had the opportunity to take on leadership positions across the firm - which has allowed me to expand the breadth of my practice in the U.S. and across the globe."
ROBERT BENSON
, PARTNER
"I've enjoyed the opportunity to co-lead the firm's Women's Health Initiative, which leverages our decades of cross-practice experience advising companies in the women's health space."

Advising Boards
King & Spalding regularly advises C-suite executives and boards of directors in their efforts to improve diversity and inclusion at all levels of their organization – an imperative to attract the best talent, clients and investors.
Promoting Opportunities with Clients
The Inkwell Series aims to establish and develop supportive relationships among diverse in-house counsel and diverse professionals from various industries, with the goal of generating business referrals, enabling peer mentorship and expanding public awareness of King & Spalding practice areas and experience.
Advancing Social Justice
With a telecommunications client and nonprofit partner Equal Justice Initiative, we are working on an important prisoner’s rights case in Alabama involving one of the most violence-ridden prisons in that state.
We have partnered with multiple clients on Election Protection, a nonpartisan voting rights initiative led by The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
"Shortly after arriving to Dubai, I, along with the Middle East Women’s Alliance created the K&S Connect Initiative in the Middle East. I also joined the Firmwide Women’s Alliance and helped launch the mentorship committee initiative. These programs have built a platform for mentorship and connection among women lawyers that sets the firm apart."

The firm hosted “Inclusion in Action” training. More than 1,000 lawyers and business service personnel learned how inclusive interactions across differences can mitigate implicit bias and were provided actionable strategies for engaging in inclusive interactions.
The Biennial Diversity Retreat brings together lawyers from across our offices to discuss opportunities for professional development and make connections unhampered by distance and daily demands. The retreat features workshops and panel discussions, presentations on topics such as business development and career advancement, and small dinners at partners’ homes.
Our 26 Affinity Groups provide an important sounding board and network for diverse lawyers to further shape and advance their practices and careers. Each Affinity Group has its own leadership, focus and budget, and executes its own activities. According to member feedback, these groups are a source of significant personal connections, professional affirmation and practice innovation across the firm. Our affinity groups include women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ lawyers, first generation professionals, differently abled lawyers, lawyers who served in the Armed Forces and more.
Part-time and flex-time work options on either a long- or short-term basis, including part-time/reduced-hour schedules while still earning credit toward partnership.
Subsidized, near-site childcare facilities in Atlanta, the largest King & Spalding office location, with priority, discounted access to Bright Horizons childcare centers in all other K&S locations.
Priority, discounted access to in-home care when regular childcare/elder care is unavailable.
A Working Parents Resource and Networking Group that provides concrete support to lawyer transitioning back to work after parental leave.
Market-leading gender neutral parental leave benefits in the U.S., including a ramp-up period for lawyers returning from leave.
"Since joining King & Spalding, I have been incredibly impressed with the overall culture and supportive environment the firm provides our women lawyers - from mentorship to collaboration to career progression. We have such a remarkable roster of powerhouse women in our firm. It's truly inspiring."

"I recently connected with a fellow lawyer through the firm's Part-Time/Flex-Time Group, which led to a new client introduction and the firm bringing on a new matter. I would never otherwise have had the opportunity to collaborate with her on a business development, as we are in different offices and practice groups. I'm grateful we were able to connect."
NICOLE PEREIRA

"Throughout my career - in the Navy, at the EPA and at King & Spalding - I have benefitted from those above me who provided me with new challenges. I try to do the same for young associates at the firm."

Our Diversity Mentoring and Sponsorship Program pairs diverse mid- and senior-level associates with partner mentors who connect them with firm leaders, help them become more visible internally and externally, and provide career advice.
The Firmwide Women’s Alliance created a mentoring program for women lawyers based on an “office hours” concept, in which women associates register for one-on-one or small group mentoring sessions with women partners who have volunteered their time.
The firm’s Mentor Awards highlight the importance of serving as a mentor, particularly for the benefit of diverse and women lawyers, annually recognizing outstanding mentors across the firm. The specific goal is twofold: (1) to recognize our existing “gold standard” mentors and (2) to encourage other lawyers to emulate them.
Allyship in Action program offered a global audience of lawyers and business services personnel training on becoming a more effective ally to all through a three-stage model of allyship.

King & Spalding partnered with the ACLU of Georgia to litigate against the Georgia Department of Community Health on behalf of two transgender women who were denied Georgia Medicaid coverage for medically-necessary gender-affirming surgery, despite the same procedures being covered for other beneficiaries. As part of resolving the case, the Georgia Department of Community Health agreed to cover gender-affirming surgery for all Georgia Medicaid beneficiaries.
A team of cross-firm K&S lawyers submitted an amicus brief in support of a petitioner’s right to access survivor benefits unjustly withheld, arguing that the respondent further perpetuated unconstitutional legal, economic and social inequities for the LGBTQ+ community. Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders and the Human Rights Campaign were K&S partners.

We work with a range of respected corporate and nonprofit partners to expose diverse youth to the legal profession and help more diverse students pursue law school and careers in law.
For decades, we have partnered with nonprofits that lead these fights in specific areas as well as with private-sector entities. Through our long-running pro bono initiatives, our lawyers provide evaluations, advice and representation related to civil rights and liberties.
In 2021 and again in 2022, we had the highest level of involvement in pro bono work in the history of the firm.
King & Spalding is a charter member of the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance, along with other AmLaw 100 firms, to help identify systemic and coordinated pro bono projects and diversity and inclusion initiatives to effectuate positive changes.
King & Spalding has signed on to “Justice Lab: Putting Racist Policing on Trial,” an initiative launched by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Louisiana. The firm is partnering with the ACLU to take on cases to challenge improper police conduct.
As part of the Police Accountability and Reform Project, King & Spalding, working with nonprofit partner Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, is performing comprehensive legal analyses to identify barriers to reform in this area.
The Equal Justice in Law Enforcement Initiative brings together the legal community, law enforcement and community members to strengthen relations and educate citizens about their rights in the area of law enforcement. King & Spalding Partner and Diversity Chair Harold Franklin launched this initiative as Atlanta Bar Association president in 2016.
King & Spalding is working with the Alliance for Asian American Justice to protect the rights of survivors of anti-Asian crimes in California.
"In addition to firm initiatives, I appreciate that King & Spalding supports me by supporting the LGBTQ+ youth organization on whose board I serve. It means a lot that the firm invests in me as a lawyer, but also invests in the LGBTQ+ community where we live and work."
ALEXIS EARLY
, PARTNER
“I started my career at the firm and have been mentored every step of the way by both women and men. This is not unique. The formal, action-oriented programs, the informal mentorships and friendships, and the firm focus on professional development create an environment where women can and do succeed.”

King & Spalding partners with the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), the nation’s largest incubator supporting and educating Black entrepreneurs and small-business owners.
