NONPROFIT PARTNERS
We are very proud of the tremendous community engagement by King & Spalding partners and employees in 2023. Collectively, we rolled up our sleeves and continued the vital work of supporting our communities through pro bono work, community service and philanthropy. Together, we achieved some remarkable successes in 2023, focusing on core needs of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Our community service efforts helped address educational needs, food insecurity and lack of access to essential healthcare benefits. Across the firm, we partnered with legal services organizations and continued our pro bono work in the core areas of civil and human rights, advocacy for immigrants, disabled veterans, incarcerated persons, and survivors of domestic violence and trafficking. We also provided legal services and critical support to nonprofit organizations, which themselves are working day in and day out in our communities to help the neediest members of our society. We have carried the momentum we have achieved together into 2024, and our valuable work continues.

Supporting Families and Children Through Community Service
King & Spalding represented students and parents in Palm Beach County, Florida, as well as Disability Rights Florida, against the school district’s use of the Baker Act to involuntarily commit students for psychiatric examination. Using the Baker Act, police employed by the school district removed hundreds of children from classrooms in handcuffs and drove them in the back of police cars for involuntary psychiatric evaluation. After the school district agreed to change its policies, we obtained judgment in our clients’ favor that provided them with significant financial compensation. Lawyers from our Washington, D.C., office continued their participation with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center and the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project to take family law cases on behalf of indigent D.C. residents. These matters allowed survivors of domestic violence to obtain protection from the courts and single parents to obtain custody of their children and much-needed child support payments. Lawyers and legal assistants in Atlanta worked with the National Center for Law and Economic Justice to ensure that low-income Georgians had access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to allow them to have enough food for their families. Our team got involved in December and ensured that families in Georgia had food on their tables over the holidays.

The firm once again raised more than $1 million for United Way and its partner charities to help build and accelerate solutions for children, families and the communities surrounding them. The Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, London, New York and Washington, D.C., offices maintained a holiday tradition of fulfilling the wishes of underserved children, collecting and donating funds as well as hundreds of gifts and coats.
Working with the Grant A Wish program, lawyers and business professionals in Chicago purchased wish list items for 111 children who are disabled, abused and/or in need. In Austin, personnel purchased high-priority items — including shampoo and conditioner, towels, blankets, baby wipes, comforter sets, and antibacterial cleaners — for women and children who are victims of sexual and/or domestic abuse.
We reunited a Guatemalan mother fleeing violence in her home country with her daughters after the client was removed from the United States. After the mother was deported, the girls were placed in foster care in California. King & Spalding attorneys in Los Angeles, New York and Sacramento won for our client the ability to return to the U.S. under humanitarian parole and reunite with her older daughter, who had aged out of foster care. We then helped her terminate the state of California’s guardianship over her younger daughter so she could be reunited with her mother, older sister and other family members.

Our pro bono work has always fought to advance fundamental civil and human rights, and we partner with and support nonprofit organizations to advocate for immigrants, incarcerated persons, troops and veterans, and other vulnerable members of society.

K&S lawyers in Houston and New York filed an asylum application for a Nigerian woman and her three children who fled Nigeria over threats of female genital mutilation. After delays in processing asylum applications resulted in a lawsuit that our client joined, the Houston Asylum Office issued an interview notice for her with very short notice. Our team quickly submitted additional documents in support of the client’s asylum claim and represented her during her asylum interview. As a result, she was granted asylum despite a low grant rate in cases involving Nigerian nationals, allowing her and her family to remain in the U.S. K&S lawyers from our Houston, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., offices helped an Afghan client — a woman who held a senior position in the former Afghan government — secure asylum in the U.S. with her family after they fled Afghanistan due to fear of persecution by the Taliban. With our assistance, including accompanying the client to an in-person interview in the Houston Asylum Office, our client and her family were granted asylum. We also worked on nine other Afghan asylum cases in 2023, assisted additional Afghan asylum seekers with their asylum interviews and helped other Afghan immigrants with temporary protected status applications. We continued our work with the International Refugee Assistance Project to help Afghans seeking Special Immigrant Visas through a program created by the U.S. government to help foreign nationals who worked with the U.S. government come to the U.S. Our work has focused on helping clients whose application was initially denied, usually because they were unable to provide required documents. K&S lawyers across 10 offices helped 34 clients through this program in 2023.
K&S lawyers in Washington, D.C.; Sacramento; and Chicago filed a successful motion for compassionate release for a man who served nearly 15 years in federal prison for nonviolent, victimless offenses in connection with running a medical marijuana dispensary in California. We worked with this client for several years on clemency petitions and a prior motion for compassionate release before securing his release. He is now thriving in the community and enjoying time with his family. A team of our lawyers in California successfully represented on appeal a client who had been held in solitary confinement for over two decades. The client initially represented himself, challenging his prolonged solitary confinement and inadequate medical care and asserting medical malpractice. The district court repeatedly denied his requests for appointment of counsel and ultimately granted summary judgment against him. We were appointed on appeal. While the appeal was pending, the private medical provider at the prison declared bankruptcy, which could have halted the case. A team of our restructuring lawyers in Atlanta helped keep the case on track. We were ultimately successful in reversing the summary judgment decision against our client, and the court ordered that he be appointed counsel on remand. K&S lawyers in Houston; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Austin; and New York City represented a man who suffered a life-threatening reaction when prison medical staff changed his medication for a brain tumor while he was incarcerated. He brought claims against the doctors and nurses who failed to provide adequate medical care, the corrections officers who denied him medical grievance forms, and the food service provider that denied him kosher meals required by his Jewish faith. The district court dismissed all his claims. We successfully represented him on appeal, with the court granting relief against all three sets of defendants so our client can pursue his claims at the trial court level.
King & Spalding partnered with the National Veterans Legal Services Program to represent a client who received an other-than-honorable discharge from the Navy after he was found to have self-medicated with marijuana to alleviate combat-related symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. After two years of sustained effort by our lawyers, the Naval Discharge Review Board upgraded the client’s discharge to honorable, enabling him to access healthcare and other benefits that had been previously unavailable to him. King & Spalding worked with the Impact Fund and Legal Aid at Work to file a landmark class-action lawsuit in August 2023 on behalf of thousands of veterans discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or predecessor policies over several decades. The lawsuit seeks revisions to discharge papers that indicate the veterans’ actual or perceived sexual orientation. The lawsuit also seeks discharge upgrades to honorable for veterans who received a discharge status that was less than honorable and were discharged solely due to their actual or perceived sexual orientation. An associate in Austin represented an active-duty U.S. Army captain in litigation against his real estate broker, who failed to deliver a promised refund of a substantial portion of the buyer’s agent fee. Following a successful but difficult deposition of the other party, the associate reached a settlement in the case that provided the client with 140% of his out-of-pocket damages.
Fighting for Those Who Serve
Our lawyers and business professionals contribute thousands of community service hours annually while also providing monetary support to dozens of charitable organizations worldwide.
Community Service
Lawyers and business professionals from all 13 of the firm’s U.S. locations participated in assembling 1,400 comfort kits containing hygiene essentials, which were distributed by the American Red Cross to displaced victims of natural disasters. Volunteers from 17 offices worldwide also participated in Red Cross CPR/AED/first-aid training in conjunction with American Heart Month. In honor of the firm’s Founders Day, the Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Washington, D.C., offices held blood drives, donating blood to local hospitals. Across 12 of the firm’s U.S. offices, lawyers and business professionals — including their friends, families and pets — participated in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. Donations for the Heart Walk help fund lifesaving science to correct heart defects in newborn babies, prevent strokes, create artificial heart valves and search for a cure for high blood pressure. Lawyers and business professionals in the London office walked, ran and bicycled to raise funds for various organizations:
Promoting Health and Wellness
London Legal Walk, raising more than 6,000 GBP for the London Legal Support Trust, which raises funds for free legal services. Standard Chartered City Race, raising 1,580 GBP for UNICEF UK. Tour De Law annual fundraiser, raising 11,000 GBP for breast cancer research.
The Austin office donated nearly 150 backpacks to the Austin and Del Valle Independent School Districts, which educate underserved students. In Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., volunteers packed more than 200 backpacks with school supplies for local students in grades 6-12. Houston lawyers and business professionals donated four banker boxes full of supplies to Teacher’s Aid, which provides supplies to Title 1 schools’ teachers and families. The New York office hosted a wish list school supply drive for pre-K to high school students, donating more than 300 scissors, erasers, backpacks, notepads and more to Coalition for the Homeless, the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless individuals and families. As part of the Thursday Network Black History Month Book Drive, the Washington, D.C., office donated nearly 300 books to Greenbelt Middle School, a diverse charter school in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In Atlanta, lawyers participated in Street Law and the Justice Robert Benham Law Camp to help foster high school students’ knowledge of the law and government through engaging lessons and one-week internships at law firms.
Enhancing Education
In Atlanta, 230 donors raised more than $31,000 for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which provided 124,708 meals to the Atlanta community. The Austin office collected canned food items for the Central Texas Food Bank, raising $1,100 and donating 300 pounds of food. In Houston, 40 volunteers collected nonperishable food and other items such as towels and socks for Martha’s Kitchen, which provides hot and nutritious meals to the homeless. The Northern Virginia office donated 46 food boxes to Cornerstones, which connects people in need to vital resources for housing, child care, food or financial assistance. In New York, Denver and Washington, D.C., volunteers made more than 1,500 sandwiches to benefit local food banks. In Tokyo, volunteers worked with staff at Second Harvest, Japan’s first incorporated food bank, to provide food for low-income families.
