The last year was one of reconnecting with our communities. It was in this spirit that King & Spalding employees supported our communities through pro bono work, community service and philanthropy. While maintaining focus on our existing community partnerships and pro bono programs, our lawyers and business professionals also worked hard to make an impact in new areas. We partnered with legal services organizations to advocate for immigrants, particularly refugees displaced by war; incarcerated persons; disabled veterans; survivors of domestic violence and trafficking; and other vulnerable members of society. We also supported organizations that do critical work to combat healthcare shortages and food insecurity, to advance educational efforts, and to bring our communities together.

Supporting Refugees Through Immigration Work
King & Spalding lawyers in San Francisco and Los Angeles worked with the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, the ACLU of Northern California and Disability Rights Advocates to successfully resolve a lawsuit against the city of Mountain View, California, on behalf of residents who live in recreational and oversized vehicles and are at risk of homelessness. The class action lawsuit challenged a citywide ban on parking recreational and oversized vehicles in most of the city, which would have displaced many longtime residents of Mountain View who can no longer afford permanent housing in the area but still have strong ties to the community, including jobs, healthcare providers and children in local schools. Under the terms of the settlement, the city agreed to provide at least three miles of available street parking for recreational and oversized vehicles, a detailed map showing where these vehicles may park, and at least one citation and 72 hours’ notice before towing vehicles that are parked where they should not be. This agreement will help keep these residents of Mountain View in their homes and in their community.

In an ongoing effort to provide Afghan citizens with immigration relief, King & Spalding worked with the International Refugee Assistance Project to help Afghan citizens appeal denials of their applications for special immigrant visas (SIV), which are only available to people who worked with the U.S. government or under a U.S. government contract. More than 35 K&S lawyers across 11 offices worked on the appeals for 20 different clients, achieving a key step in the SIV process and paving the way for these clients to come to the U.S. King & Spalding lawyers in San Francisco and Los Angeles represented a Guatemalan woman whose husband, a police officer in Guatemala, abused her. Because her husband was a police officer, the client was not able to report him to the authorities or seek help for her serious injuries. The immigration judge granted asylum based on the client’s membership in a particular social group of Guatemalan women who are unable to leave their marriages, allowing the client and her sons to remain safely and legally in the U.S.
King & Spalding litigators in Atlanta teamed up with the University of California, Irvine School of Law’s Criminal Justice Clinic and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to file successful compassionate release and habeas motions for two different clients incarcerated in South Georgia. The team was successful on behalf of a man who had served 23 years in federal prison for a drug offense – more prison time than he would have been sentenced to if he were convicted of the same offense today. The team also filed a successful habeas petition on behalf of a client who was convicted on an unconstitutional charge.
Our pro bono work has always fought to advance fundamental human rights. Leveraging our expertise, we advocate for underrepresented populations.

King & Spalding teamed up with local advocates in a lawsuit seeking systemic change with regard to the provision of mental health care in a state prison system. Prior to King & Spalding’s involvement, the prisons’ mental health care was substandard in multiple ways, leading to an alarming increase in suicides and other poor outcomes. King & Spalding lawyers participated in a multi-week evidentiary hearing in federal court, which led to a comprehensive order from the judge improving the care provided in multiple significant ways and mandating ongoing monitoring and auditing using outside mental health experts.

A cross-office team of King & Spalding lawyers helped establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to securing safety and privacy for members of the federal judiciary and their families. The organization honors the late son of a U.S. District Court judge, who was killed at home in 2020 by a disgruntled former litigant, who found the judge’s address through an internet search. King & Spalding lawyers then represented the organization to advocate in Congress for the passage of the Judicial Security and Privacy Act, which makes it easier to protect judges’ personal identifying information online. The act had bipartisan support in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and President Biden signed the act into law on December 23, 2022. King & Spalding lawyers in Singapore, New York and Los Angeles represented Fulbright University Vietnam, Vietnam’s first private nonprofit university, in a large project financing a package from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. The package will finance a new campus in Ho Chi Minh City, with the aim of closing the gap between the demand for skilled employees in Vietnam’s workforce and educational opportunities in the country.

K&S lawyers in Los Angeles scored an asylum victory in Immigration Court for a transgender woman from El Salvador. The client fled from El Salvador after experiencing multiple instances of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Salvadoran police because of her transgender status. During her travels to the U.S., the client and two friends were kidnapped by a human trafficker, who attempted to sell them into sex slavery. She was able to escape from the trafficker and entered the U.S. in 2014. Finally, eight years later, an immigration judge granted her asylum, allowing her to stay safely and legally in the U.S.
King & Spalding teamed with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, stepping up to take cancer down through the Big Climb, during which participants climb iconic structures from coast to coast across the U.S. Since 2007, after the loss of a dear colleague, K&S has been committed to raising money for and awareness of blood cancers. Lawyers and personnel in Frankfurt supported the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge, the world’s largest corporate running event. In 2022, the challenge took place in 15 locations across eight countries and six continents with one mission: to serve as a catalyst between work and wellness. The event offers companies opportunities to bond over a shared experience powered by fitness, friendly competition, food and fun.
King & Spalding supported Partnerships for Children at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services along with the Austin Independent School District's Back-to-School BASH, filling backpacks with supplies for children in need. The firm held a fundraiser for the National Center for Children and Families and assembled backpacks with back-to-school essentials. K&S volunteers supported Thursday Network in Washington, D.C., and employees purchased books for students in need.
In a cross-office collaboration with a Washington, D.C., client and a local bar association in Atlanta, 150 King & Spalding volunteers supported Blessings in a Backpack, the only nationwide nonprofit that addresses the weekend food insecurity of school-age children. Volunteers collectively packed 2,000 bags of food containing three meals each, and 6,000 meals were donated directly to local schools. The Austin office once again supported Austin Sunshine Camp and their mission of providing the magic of overnight camp without the barrier of cost. Volunteers donated more than 100 boxes of cereal, fruit cups, applesauce packets, other treats and toothbrushes for campers.

Community Service
At King & Spalding, our values are reflected in the many ways our lawyers and business services professionals show up to positively impact the lives of those in need.
The firm supported the Night Ministry, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that works to provide housing, healthcare and human connection to members of the community struggling with poverty or homelessness. Volunteers purchased sack lunch items and prepared 200 sandwiches for the organization. Volunteers in Denver supported Ruby’s Refugee Pantry and Market, a multicultural artisan and food destination incubating refugee, immigrant, and indigenous entrepreneurs and supporting local businesses. King & Spalding hosted a fundraiser for Food Bank for NYC and additionally supported City Harvest with a food donation drive, providing more than 100 pounds of food over Thanksgiving for the New York community.
King & Spalding’s London office continued its support for the Support Dogs charity, raising more than £8,000 for the organization, which supplies support dogs to people with autism, epilepsy and disability. The firm’s Miami office opened in 2022, eager to engage with the local community. The inaugural service project was a collaboration with an organization that supports babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Volunteers packed 50 bags with essential items to help families care for their babies while they are in the NICU. All families whose baby has an expected stay in the NICU of three weeks or longer receive a bag of essentials. A team from K&S in Geneva spent the day supporting a flea-market sale, raising funds for and providing companionship to residents of Foyer du Vallon, an organization dedicated to supporting blind and visually impaired seniors.
Celebrated every year by King & Spalding lawyers and personnel, K&S Founders Day is a firmwide community service initiative commemorating the legacy of service and community engagement established by our founding partners more than 135 years ago. In 2022, every office served the community during the month of June with one or more service projects, including the Foundation for Hospital Art, which is dedicated to involving patients and volunteers worldwide to create colorful, soothing artwork donated to hospitals to help soften the often-stressful hospital experience.
