A Culture of Giving Back
The unique challenges of the past year emphasized the importance of giving back in ways never seen before. Through a global pandemic, King & Spalding personnel increased their efforts to address critical needs in our communities around the globe.
Despite the challenges of COVID-19, our lawyers and staff mobilized to recreate many of our signature pro bono and community service projects in a virtual format. We partnered with legal services organizations working to increase fairness in our criminal justice system. We supported and advocated for underrepresented populations through our work with nonprofit organizations serving the LGBTQ+, immigrant and refugee communities.
As the world returns to a “new normal,” we hope to gather in person soon to serve our communities at food banks, hospitals, elder care facilities, neighborhood cleanups and schools. In the meantime, we continue to live out our firm’s commitment to support the communities in which we live and work through our pro bono work, virtual community service and philanthropy.

We raised more than $160,000 for COVID-19 relief efforts to support healthcare workers, hospitals and food security.
Our Washington, D.C., office raised more than $50,000 for longtime partner Children’s National Hospital to provide
personal protective equipment, test for the virus at Children’s Hospital’s remote sites, expand telemedicine options for families, and support healthcare workers with personal needs such as childcare and transportation. Of the funds raised, $10,000 was allocated to Dr. Bear’s Closet, which provides books, games and toys to pediatric patients to brighten their hospital stay. Volunteers also read and recorded children’s books, which were played over the hospital’s closed-circuit TV system.
Across the U.S., volunteers and their family members sewed cloth face coverings for frontline workers, friends and neighbors; donated blood through American Red Cross to help maintain blood supply at hospitals; and wrote thank-you cards to frontline healthcare workers in partnership with Operation Gratitude.
Volunteers in Charlotte, Atlanta and New York City wrote cards to isolated seniors at assisted living facilities and sent games and puzzles to keep residents engaged during shelter-in-place orders.
The Los Angeles office sent lunch and Starbucks gift cards to frontline healthcare workers on COVID-19 floors at a local hospital.

A cross-office team of King & Spalding litigators, working with a number of partners including the University of Miami School of Law Immigration Clinic, represented a group of immigrants detained at three facilities in Southern Florida who were protesting the conditions of their confinement in light of the rapid spread of COVID-19 in prisons and jails. The King & Spalding team won a preliminary injunction against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement that significantly improved confinement conditions (including multiple measures to lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission) and has successfully reached a settlement with the government to resolve the case.

Lawyers in our New York and Atlanta offices participated in innovative virtual pro bono clinics, sponsored by Lawyers for Good Government, to help small-business owners impacted by COVID-19. The areas of assistance included corporate governance, contract review, intellectual property and commercial real estate.
Our lawyers prepared a webinar on the CARES Act legislation for more than 200 nonprofit and pro bono clients and partners, with a focus on the financial and legal implications for universities, healthcare systems and nonprofit organizations.
When COVID-19 began taking its devastating toll around the world, King & Spalding lawyers and staff sprang into action to help meet critical needs within in our communities.

As tragedies in 2020 revealed the amount of work still to be done to overcome inequality in the U.S. and around the world, King & Spalding lawyers and staff quickly mobilized to advance equal justice for all. Whether it was redoubling efforts with some of our long-standing pro bono partners or launching new programs, we sought new ways to make a difference.

Partnering to Promote Equality and Justice
More than ever, King & Spalding lawyers and staff are dedicated to supporting the 24 communities in which we
live and work through pro bono legal and community service partnerships, nonprofit board leadership, and fundraising
and charitable giving. Alongside valued nonprofit partners
and clients, we address critical needs in our communities.
During the first few months of the global COVID-19 crisis,
we have provided free legal services to vulnerable tenants, domestic violence victims and low-income people; sewn face masks for healthcare workers; donated blood; provided online career advice to disadvantaged youth; translated online books for immigrant children to increase their literacy skills; staffed pro bono advice clinics for small businesses and nonprofits with diminished revenue due to COVID-19; and contributed nearly $160,000 through individual and firm contributions
to pandemic relief efforts.
Our pro bono work, such as our longtime involvement
with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law,
the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Center for Human Rights and numerous others, always has targeted inequality. We will continue to do so and expand our efforts
as the country grapples with criminal and social justice
reforms following the death of George Floyd.
Reaching Out highlights just a few of the ways in which our lawyers and staff gave back in 2019 as we renew our efforts
in 2020 and focus on today’s challenges.
